I watched this controversial fight on ESPN Classic recently and saw something I hadn't seen before. The punch that KO'ed Liston certainly didn't look like much, but when Liston got up and fought after being down for over 20 seconds, he was clearly reeling. He never would have made it through the round and even those commentators were laughing about how Liston took a dive. Ali may not have hit him hard, he may just have hit him in the right place, but Liston was clearly out when he tried to get up, then when he finally did. The painting is inscribed:
