"Red Cymbidiums"
In the mid 1980's I really got into growing orchids, mostly Cymbidiums. Ann and I had split up for about a year, one of my bosses, Chip, at KDB was an avid orchid grower, and he gave me a lot of info. They are the only flowers I've ever been able to grow successfully. I had a number of them of many different colors, and these red ones were some of my favorites. It was also a period of my life where I had not mastered my art yet, and I was trying hard to get another three or four years to live, and painted all the time. Skip Spence told me that "A master can do his best consistently" and I was still working at that. I learned a lot from the intricacy, delicacy, and power of these flowers, as the top clumps that almost looked like little pterodactyls seem to come right at you. Vincent van Gogh says "I learned everything I know from my pocket knife: I put it in every position I could think of and drew it." I could say something similar from cymbidiums, as I painted all the different colors of these flowers.
