"Fuschias"
When I got back to Santa Barbara from Boston, I had analyzed, discussed, and done copies from Monet, van Gogh, Rembrandt, Delacroix, etc. from MFA, Boston. Getting back to Santa Barbara I was struck by all the flowers everywhere, gardens, hanging pots, and everything else. I really learned to color by painting those flowers, the simplicity of things like this, against the complexity of the gardens. I loved the Japanese Woodblock Prints of Hokusai and Hiroshige, and did a series of paintings like this one as a tribute, and I just liked them. This was a hanging fuscia in a basket at a house around the corner from where we lived on Arrellaga St. in Santa Barbara.
