"Red Rose in a Bottle"

In 1983 my friend Jerel would bring me roses to paint from the garden his girlfriend Joanne grew. At the time I was still reading the Complete Letters of Vincent van Gogh, although I had narrowed it mostly to Volume 2, where he was still learning and was explaining it very well to his brother, and to me. One thing he was emphasizing was that you learn to paint, say, a lawn, by painting "...a single blade of grass". It was something he was learning from the Japanese Woodblock prints, and I applied it to this rose and another in a bottle. I was also drinking from exotic beer bottles at the time, and using them for vases.
