| Set at "Wotan's Throne" in the Grand Canyon at sunset, this picture shows the tumultuous climax of "Das Rheingold," the f irst of the Ring Operas. Alberich's curse on the Ring has manifested itself for the first time. Fafner the Giant has killed his brother Fasolt, in order to possess The Ring of the Niebelung. The Rhein Maidens, far below, call out to Wotan for the return of their golden Ring. He's powerless, though. A haughty Loge wants nothing to do with "these Gods." Donner swings his hammer, the mists clear, and Valhalla, the castle of the Gods becomes visible, as they prepare to cross the Rainbow Bridge to their new home. |
