I've always loved dance and when I got interested in the culture of Brazil in the early 2000's it was only natural that I got interested in Samba. I saw some dance around LA and then ended up at the second Santa Barbara Brazilian Carnaval in 2004 for the first time. This is one of the first Samba paintings that I've done over the years, and it's still one of my favorites. My paintings are all about motion and color, and I really like both in this one. I like the slinky movement of the dancer on the left, along with her spectacular headdress. My friend Jennifer Parker anchors the center while shaking it back to the left, and the black Samba dancer leans in to close off the right. The background yellow and green move everything forward, with the design on the wall accenting and closing off the motion everywhere.
