In 1969 after being released from Belleview, Spence rode his motorcycle
to Nashville to record his legendary album, "Oar." Skip wrote
all of the songs, played all the instruments, sang all the vocals, and
produced it. This was the first album of it's kind. Paul McCartney followed
with his solo album in 1971, and many others have since. In 1999 "Oar"
was re-released on Sundazed Records and went as high as #4 on the Amazon.com
sales charts. Despite getting minimal promotion, "Oar" recieved
numerous industry awards for 1999. "More Oar," a tribute album
with covers of the original by Robert Plant, Tom Waitts, Robyn Hitchcock,
and Minus 5, among others was also released on Birdman Records with much
success. This painting was done from the back cover photo of the original
release as a tribute following Skip's passing.
